about affiliate membership

The Signet Society is an interdisciplinary and intergenerational community. Since 1870, the Signet has been a place where undergraduate students at Harvard College who are drawn to the arts and letters—whatever their declared field of study—can converse with graduates and graduate students, with faculty, and with working artists, journalists, authors, lawyers, politicians, and more.

Non-undergraduates who are interested in becoming involved with the Signet on a regular basis should consider applying for Affiliate membership in the Society. Affiliates advance the Signet’s purpose by encouraging the artistic, literary, and creative efforts of our undergraduate members. This may be by setting an example of living a creative life, bringing guests to lunch who may be invigorating connections for students, or presenting one’s own artistic work more directly—e.g. inviting the Signet community to exhibitions or readings, giving an artist talk, hosting a panel discussion, or speaking about one’s work at post-lunch coffee.

We welcome Affiliates from a broad range of artistic and literary backgrounds. Affiliates are frequently graduate students, faculty, or other individuals who are similarly involved in the Harvard community. Many Affiliates are Harvard faculty, fellows, administrators, alumni, and graduate students; others may be visiting or local artists, journalists, authors, scholars, or individuals involved in a wide range of other artistic, literary, and scholarly fields. Preference is given to individuals who live locally, as a primary goal of the program is to bring Affiliates together with undergraduate members on campus.
